Ducati 250 Mark3
It is a 1969 Ducati 250 MK 3. The '69 model is the second of the 'wide-case' singles. The first model 'wide-case' was the 1968 model which had two filler caps on the petrol tank and a longer seat. The 'wide-case' bevel drive cam engines were the first to be made with Desmo valve actuation as an option. These were known as MK3D models. As a MK3 model, mine has 'hairpin' valve return springs.
The clip-on handlebars mark the bike as a sports model, although some Desmo models for the US market also came with normal bars. The bike has a SSI 29MM smoothbore carburettor with bell-mouth and no airfilter, it also has a Veglia tachometer that is cable driven off the end of the cam. Unlike the earlier narrow-case Mach 1 bikes, which were advertised as 100 mph bikes, my bike has forward mounted footpegs and a less radical camshaft. |

The later 'wide-case' sports bikes such as the 'silver shotgun' and the yellow cafe racers were all Desmo's. The bike is fun to ride with good brakes. The seat however is a bit hard and you wouldn't really want to ride a long distance on it. In true Italian tradition the bike is form over function and so it should be. |
